1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Recasts

Jun 10, 2014

    1. Okay so I don't know if it's bad to ask this or not but, is there a way to tell a doll recast from a legit model from the company?

    2. I think some of them are really good - you'd need to be familiar with the real thing to be able to tell. Really it's a case of 'buyer beware' - If it's a new doll you're after, then buy direct from the company, or through a reputable dealer. If you're buying a used doll then always ask about the doll's history if there is no box or certificate - not all companies issue certificates, but there should be a box at least. Although people do sometimes chuck them out as they take up tons of room! I always keep all my boxes as I think they add value to the doll if I want to sell it. But people should be able to tell you where they bought the doll at least. On ebay I keep a 'blacklist' of all the people who sell used recasts - They often sell legit dolls too, but I would be wary about buying anything from them, and also I wouldn't want to give my money to someone who's going to use it to buy another recast!

    3. Alot of legit dolls also have headplates with the companies logo on, or a serial number (i think Volks has that). Dollchateau and Crobidoll are examples where you would expect a head plate logos.

If they are the original owner selling a doll second hand they might be able to show you a screen shot of their order page on the doll manufacturers website. Although if they are very old dolls chances are those order forms aren't on the websites anymore. I checked my Luts boys order from 2006/7 and its no longer there.

Helpful clues can also be default faceups if the company has distinctive artist styles, and what if anything the doll might come with like recognisable pillows (but obviously they can be bought so don't base your decision solely on that). And on Den of Angels its always useful to check the sellers feedback, that would be my first step :)

    4. Desphiria In some way I do think it IS bad to ask about the recasts here. I'm sure it it is prohibited to talk about bootlegs or recasts here on DoA but I may be wrong offcourse.

    5. Hi Desphiria,

Recasts are a serious problem and concern within the BJD hobby. Den of Angels has a very strict zero tolerance policy in regards to recasts and recast discussions. There is no 100% way to always know if a specific doll is a recast or legitimate so buyers should do their research and become as familiar with the company and products as possible and try to buy direct from the company or authorized dealer whenever possible. Most companies will let you know if you aren't sure if a dealer is legitimate or not. Look for details like headplates, paperwork, original packaging, etc if you can (and know what dolls come with these things and what do not)
If the price is too good to be true, it probably is. If the doll is being sold in colors never released by the original company, it is probably going to be a recast.
However, as discussions regarding recasts are not generally allowed on Den of Angels, this thread is being closed.
Please post in Ask the Moderators if you have any concerns regarding a specific doll or seller.
