Rosslyn, can't wait to see your archer photoshoot! I have seen doll-size bows cut out of wood, in the bent shape. Or could you make the bow in three pieces? The grip as a solid piece, and the two arms out of something bendy?
The type of bow I mean to make for him doesn't have the modern recurve shape of Riser+Limbs. It's an English longbow, which I'll be modeling after my own: http://www.3riversarchery.com/bows+p...X_product.html It's more or less a "stick and string" construction, tillered and nocked but still fairly simple in shape. Because he won't actually be firing it, I can make two versions of it out of something inflexible. One version will be slack, the other at full draw, so he has two "poses" of it to use for pictures. I may go ahead and make a third version at half draw.
The pants were made by PamSD and I think they're meant to be roughly SD17 size. The thing about his boots is that they're Medieval boots- contrary to Hollywood, you almost never saw calf high boots until the 1500s or so, Tudor into Early Renaissance- so these boots are ankle boots. I made them for a 60cm doll, but this Granado boy has such teeny wee feets, and good thing too. Being a forester, he needs boots more than Mathonwy does, so I've given the boots to him and promised Math some nice indoor-worker shoes. Mathonwy remains skeptical but is agreeing that being a scribe doesn't call for boots anyhow. : DWah... You're already 'full steam ahead' with this guy!
Lucky that you already had some stuff that fit him. Especially getting boots over those calves! ^^ Given that they appear to be so large and thick though, Granado boys turn out to be surprisingly lean, don't they? I was quite surprised at the amount of stuff they fit into.
Yeah, I think it was the wood, and even soaking it, it was just not bendy enough, and I don't have access to or time for the work it'd take to do this right with wood. I'll be using the Apoxie and wire technique and making various versions of the bow for different poses.What techniques did you use to try to bend your wood? You shouldn't need to steam it for all that long, given its size... It could simply be the wood you were trying to use. Older wood doesn't bend that easily (even with steaming) and some types of wood are more brittle than others. My high school woodworking teacher advocated shaping your wood on the same day it was cut. Hehe. He then had us trying to shape wood that had likely been stored in the tech room for the past ten years!
Whatever you decide to use for it, I can't wait to see your guy drawing back his bow!
