Thread: Volks YoSD and YoTenshi Discussion part 5

  1. #21
CharmeC: technically all YoSD are considered limited. I really don't like the acrylic eyes that come with them so that's the first thing that goes. Tenshis usually are released with HG Glass eyes. The Disney Yos had some experimental eyes that look to be urethane called Dollfie eyes. The fullest YoSD started having HG glass eyes.

My one pet peeve I can spend a lot of time fiddling with eye placement. Some molds look good with side glancing eyes. Others look nice with slightly upward glancing. I avoid the stare straight deer in headlights or vacant stare.

Did you also switch out the hands in addition to wiring? Yo hands usually have separate wrist balls.

JennyNemesis: Faceup enhacement should be the beginners class, beginners painting is somewhat a misnomer... I find it easier to add to something already there vs starting from scratch. I usually end up with uneven brows, lol.

They teach reshaping existing brows by adding extra hairs, adding temporary pastel to cheeks and eyes, adding lip lines, adding gloss and removing eyes in the enhancement class.

Wow, I've been to 3 beginners-painting classes and not once did they show us how to fix existing faceups! We always got the basic face-designing & execution. Adding extra hairs to eyebrows is something I'd've loved to learn. I suppose it was the luck of the draw every time - must've gotten the wrong teachers! And, fixing those lips, that's totally valuable. Anyway, thanks for the impromptu tutorial on it.

    AreeElf,

Side-way glance is the way to go especially for a playful or naughty look! I think the default eyes for Puff were probably 16mm like the White Rabbit. His eye openings are really not big enough to go well with 16mm. Do your yos mostly wear 14mm or 16mm? Solo is wearing Island doll hands in the picture, the resin matches luckily.

This was from the last thread but I would find it rude of me if I don't reply hehe >-<

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

AreeElf : Thank you so much! And yes, you are right. I did name her after her eye color actually! Hahah I see. >__< They do remind me of Ube/Taro as well! Though for some reason I see much more blue than violet .. The last owner also said it's a light purple colored wing. I must have really bad eyesight, LOL!

Your twins are super super sweet! I always love seeing them. Brooklyn is so cute clinging on to her brother like that. They always make me want to get another sei, lol! Mint says hi to your sweet twins too! Yes ^o^ I see a few Mold B's at flickr and theyre always all so different. I suppose this is what attracted me to certain molds. I realize that 4 out of 6 dolls I have are super versatile molds. hehe

Fransyung : Yes, what Xiaocream said is right. She is a Sei Tenshi Mold B ^^ Thank you for liking her. I see a few Sei's in YJ every now and then but I got this girl here on DoA. She was actually for sale for a very long time and I been eyeing her ever since she was put up for sale but the initial price was too high for me. T//T

Brighteyes22 : Thank you so much! Your little Maria is so cute as well. She looks like she is ready to play!

Amoraseth : Thank you so much! I like her in the blond wig too ^__^ hehe. She fortunately looks good in other wig colors as well.

Revien : Thank you!! You are too kind. >__< I have loved this mold for a long time too. hehe Your Sparrow has such a nice determined look. Very full of attitude. He looks like he's having fun resting on the grass!

Is there a safe way or tutorial on how to change the eyes? I guess they come glued in? I am not sure how to safely remove this glue, then again I so love how Fiver looks, even if the farther I read in Watership Down the more I think about calling Fiver, Pippin - ack! Name help needed Too!

I actually really like the look of the lips both with the black and without - you did a wonderful job on Juninha AreeElf she is such a lovely one!

bakayara onna Nigel does look pretty Fab in his hat and I Love the necklace you made him

Brighteyes Maria is Precious in her little PJs - she looks like a feisty lil one!

Reizi Chan - your little shy one is sooo incredibly cute looking very flirty there actually

GoodbyeKitty - that is so sweet you named her after your grade school friends, amazing how different the same sculpt can look with different face ups - that crocheted cap is wonderful!

Aiko Chan - Belle looks so very sweet - I do think Pink suits her Perfectly - and clearly she does too!

Juliepinetree - I love how Mizuki even found a color coordinated new friend - sooo Cute!

DollZwize : There are 3 ways that I know of (2 I have tried) that is considered to be safe in removing the eyes/glue from yosds or practically any volks doll that has their eyes hot glued in.

Some try using the hair dryer in the lowest setting. The hot glue gets soft in a couple of minutes and you slowly remove it with pliers/strong tweezers. (I have not tried this method. I am too scared of warping the doll's head but many people use this method and is assured to be safe for your doll)

In the past I have put my dolls in the freezer for 30 mins usually and the Hot glue becomes stiff enough to remove with pliers. This takes a while to do depending on how Volks glued your eyes. A few times mine came off in 15 mins while most I take around 40 mins in removing it.

    The other method that I usually do nowadays (cos the freezers here stink.. don't want the smell to get on my doll TxT) is with the use of Mr. Color Thinner. Better to dip a small flat head screw driver ( as small as you can find) in the thinner and slowly let the thinner get into the glue for a few minutes and slowly poke it until it comes off. Be careful though because you can scratch the resin with the screwdriver. ^^;

Any of these methods require patience unfortunately. >__< It really depends on how the person who glued your eyes in did it neatly.. Some do dollops at a time and it keeps breaking apart.. some do it too thick as well T-T...

For eye removal i wrapped hiko in a wash cloth, put that in a ziplock bag, and placed him in the freezer for an hour. they popped right out with just a little picking with my nail after that

Usually I just dip a Q-tip in some thinner and coat the whole hot glue, I let the thinner soak into the hot glue and since I have no intention of keeping the acrylics I use my thumb or my pointer and use a little bit of force and push the eyes out from the front of the dolls face. usually they come out right away and the hot glue residue can be taken out with ease. This usually doesn't damage the acrylics but if you are plan on keeping the acrylics, I don't think you should do this. This method is actually the quickest and easiest for me ^_^

Check in the new thread!Me too, use the freezer method. But just recently when I got my Ken, I didn't have to freeze him up first and instead just poked the eyes from the front and the hot glue came off pretty easily.

Oh, and also Rosemonde says hi. Rosebud looks confused with (yet another) younger sibling.

He looks so cute Dollswize!! Yep, volks hot glues in all their default eyes. I am all for the Mr. Color thinner, especially with dolls like the White Rabbit that have glass eyes as it can also help to remove the glue from the glass one you have removed them if you do not have Mr. Color thinner, you can use one of the other methods and acrylic remover afterwards on just the eyes to help get any stubborn left over glue off.

DollZwize: Thanks, Tiggy sure is enjoying her rabbit.
I use this method for removing eyes.

If I don't have thinner I've dipped the metal tool in hot water. When it's gets hot it melts the glue slightly to be able to pry. It takes much longer and once I messed up and I accidentally pried lashes too. Now I have a huge bottle of X-20 around. It took less than 5 minutes to take out Juninha's eyes with this method. Before I bought the Volks tool I used a metal cuticle pusher readily available at most drug stores. I don't use Volks eye putty for glass eyes they don't hold. I use clear Mack's silicone ear plugs.

The hair dryer method often times fries the lashes if one is not careful. A few friends swear by hair dryer method.

OctoberAnna Rosemonde and Rosebud look adorable.

Hane Those are lovely fur wigs.

Nurie yup B molds are versatile. I took this photo of Bagoas with Brooklyn at March NYC meetup
    http://images15.fotki.com/v587/photo...MG_0512-vi.jpg
Bagoas belongs to Dodona he's a Eunuch and loves to lounge. He's such a cutey in Harem pants. He has white wings.

CharmeC Volks puts 16mm on most Yos. Ken, Show and Mika they put 14 mm as default. I have 14 mm on most of my Yos. The two exceptions are Ondine (Nono) she has 16 mm zoukeimura eyes on and Sinjun (Shizuku) who wears 12mm ED? I put the size that gives them some white showing. Volks likes less white showing.

OctoberAnna, I love the vivid purple eyes your pair has...what brand/color are they?

Ken is adorable, just as I thought he'd be, and I was already smitten with Mika. I hope someday they'll eventually re-release them in YoSD form as well.

Yes: I seem to often name my dolls after old friends – that, or characters from books I've read (Fiver, you're next)! I had one doll who was nameless for a few years, until I started a new job and met a young man who looked very much like my boy BJD! I never told him that I'd done it – I didn't want to creep the guy out!

I was so excited when you introduced your White Rabbit at the end of the last thread, and meant to ask you about his name. I wanted to know if your Fiver was "slightly psychic" like the Fiver in the book?
And: Yes! Change his name if you feel you must! My Yo Lillie's first name was "Peggy" because the wig she came with reminded me of another childhood friend. I changed it to "Rebecca" when she was wearing a dark auburn wig, and then I thought she Looked Like a certain famous fashion-model/acteress, so I changed it to "Brooke". I finally settled on "Imogen" because I decided that it suites her no matter what wig or eyes I will change her into in the future.

JennyNemesis: I had to deal with that same decision when Yo-Lillie came home! Some Volks faces just seem to naturally be smiling; the "mouth commas" make sense, and enhance the sculpt. The lines on my Yo were rather dark and obvious and crooked and didn't seem to keep with the shape of the mouth. I soaked a round toothpick in acetone (nail polish remover) and dabbed and scraped at the corners until the lines were mostly gone. The toothpicks helped me put the acetone exactly where I wanted it to go, and gave me a bit of traction for rubbing off the old paint. I only used so harsh a chemical because it was in such a tiny area. If I was wiping off a doll's whole face, I'd definitely use something made by Volks, or plain rubbing alchahol.

Joining the eye conversation late: Megu came with very dark brown acrylics in 16mm. I was lucky, because whomever put the eyes in at the factory used very neat little "beads" of hot glue. I have a bottle of hot-glue gun cleaner that I bought at my local craft store. I applied it with an eye dropper before pulling (yanking) with a pair of pliers. The eyes did crack, but I wasn't interested in saving them. Like I said earlier, Megu's eyelashes came off in the process, but her eye makeup wasn't smudged by the remover. The picture of Megu shows her wearing 14mm silicone eyes from EyeCo.

Imogen (Lillie; Peggy; Brooke) came with 14mm acrylic blue-grey eyes. After they were out (using the same method) I realized that her eyes were unusual in that the Iris was smaller than is standard for 14mm. Here you can see Imogen's original eyes and dark smile lines:

nurie: I think I would like to "add a few hairs" to the eyebrows, as well.

Because of the very almond shape of Lillie's eyes I wanted to use as small an eye as was possible without seeing "holes" near the edges of the socket. She now wears another pair of EyeCo's in 11mm – the company's smallest size, seen Here: http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3148/5...3508f0d6ae.jpg This is the "Rebecca" wig, incidentally.

Lillie is such a grownup face-- I always thought she & Eddie were the "young-old gnome" sculpts, because they seem so ageless. Especially around the eyes. It's amazing that she can wear 11mms! My friend has an Eddie who is a garden-gnome too, always thought he had the same kind of young-old-wiseman look that Lillie does.

I think my Isao would wake up more if I put 14/13mms in him, but right now I'm just grooving on his all-defaultness. ^^
