Thread: Usernames containing foreign or language-specific characters

Usernames containing foreign or language-specific characters

DoA is no longer allowing usernames to contain foreign (i.e. Chinese or Japanese) characters or special, font-specific symbols.

DoA is an English-speaking board, so most usernames of this sort are unreadable to our members. In addition, not all members can view special language-specific fonts or characters, making them appear as ???? or blank boxes. This means that those members cannot PM or look up those usernames in the member list. For the same reason, we are also disallowing special characters that require certain foreign language font symbols - such as hearts, diamonds, etc.

Having words in foreign languages in usernames is fine, as long as they use roman letters. In general, if the character can be found on a standard Western keyboard, it's fine.

Members who have special characters in their names will be contacted by the moderators to change their usernames.

    Thanks for your understanding!

For now, it only applies to usernames.

Would this also apply for accented roman letters, such as "é", "ü", "ñ", etc? I suppose they'd fall under the same category as hearts and such, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

I wouldn't think so. You can make those with just a Western keyboard.
